Many different civilizations have existed within Turkey’s present-day border making Turkey a fantastic place to explore what these civilizations left behind in the form of architecture and culture. We will travel from one end of Turkey to the other and photograph many amazing sites that are hundreds and thousands of years old. We will also enjoy the local customs and culture that has evolved in Turkey and will have many chances to photograph the people in their daily routine and their special events.
Turkey for Active Photographers is specifically designed for flexible, energetic people that want to have fun experiencing this exciting travel destination while capturing their journey in photographs. Unlike most Global Travel Photography tours, however, this tour has been formatted to appeal to non-photographers as well in order to accommodate photographers that want to travel with someone that does not share their passion for photography.
We will start our journey in Istanbul where we will photograph a few of the scenic sites such as the Suleymaniye Mosque, Galata Bride, Kadirga, the Spice Market and the Bosphorus waterfront. We’ll be back in Istanbul at the end of the trip so we’ll save the other attractions until then.
Next we fly to Mardin in the eastern end of Turkey where we will visit an old bazaar with medieval scenes, a 13th century theological school, an ancient graveyard and a Syrian Orthodox Christian Monastery. We will also visit Sanliurfa, the city of prophets where Abraham, Job, Jethro and Moses lived and take pictures of the holy sites and the people there today. Our next stop is Harran, old Canaan, to photograph the oldest mosque in Anatolia as well as the ant hill-like houses here. Then we drive to Adiyaman to see the Ataturk Dam and the Euphrates River.
One of the highlights of the trip, Mount Nemrut, is next. We will hike to the top of the mountain for a sunrise shot of the temple built here in the first century BC. The mountains and local villages will also warrant a few stops.
Our next destination is Cappadocia, an area of rock formations, caves and underground cities carved in volcanic ash. We will photograph these unique sites in both morning and evening light and will even stay in a cave-based hotel. One morning we will ride a hot air balloon over this area and photograph it from the air. This is sure to be an experience that you will never forget.
We continue travelling west by flying to Izmir and driving to Kusadasi on the Aegean Sea. From here we will visit the Roman city of Ephesus, one of the best preserved Roman city anywhere. We will also stop in Sirince, a quaint mountain village.
Our group will return to Istanbul for the last few days of the trip and we’ve saved the best for last. We’ll visit Hagia Sophia, the Byzantine Hippodrome, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, the Underground Cistern and the Grand Bazaar. We’ll take a boat ride up the Bosphorus to photograph the waterfront houses, palaces, forts and mosques. One evening we will attend a whirling derwish performance that is sure to challenge your photography skills. We will have a special farewell dinner on our last evening in Istanbul and fly home the following morning.
